Who we are and what we do
We’re Fusion Farms and we are on a mission to empower Puerto Rico to grow its own fresh, delicious, and nutritious food rather than relying on imports from the United States and other countries.
The island took a massive hit after Hurricane Maria in 2017 and since has struggled to get back on its feet. Over 80% of the island’s farms were destroyed by the storm, not to mention its widespread infrastructure and power grid.
Where others saw damage and despair, we saw the opportunity to make a difference
Fusion Farms is the first organization of its kind in Puerto Rico and we are transforming the unused PRIDCO buildings that are scattered across the island into hurricane protected, vertical aquaponic farms.
Within these contained and controlled environments, vegetables, leafy greens, micro-greens, fruits, and herbs can be grown in prolific quantities on vertical racks and supplied to the island, greatly reducing its people’s dependence on imported fresh produce, which isn’t quite so fresh after several weeks in transit and customs.
Furthermore, Fusion Farms will be able to supply a fresh, sustainable source of fish, since Tilapia are an essential component of aquaculture.
Our solution is, therefore, the “fusion” of hydroponically grown fresh produce and fish farming within a self-sustained and controlled ecosystem powered by renewable energy (thanks to our solar panel installation). The hurricane protected buildings are there, empty, waiting. All we have to do is put them to good use and that’s exactly what Fusion Farms has already done with our pilot facility in Mayagüez, in western Puerto Rico.
A reliable, sustainable, and fresh source of food, all year round
Our output? A reliable, year-round harvest of fresh, healthy, nutrient-rich produce that isn’t vulnerable to bad weather or Puerto Rico’s wavering power grid and isn’t limited by day or night or seasonality. Oh, and all of our produce is 100% organic, non-GMO, and pesticide-free!
Our pilot project is based in Mayagüez but it is our mission to design a totally scalable, repeatable model of our operations and to build multiple Fusion Farms aquaponics facilities across the island, all hurricane protected. Furthermore, we strive to educate and employ our beloved farmers and locals to work these facilities, and, in turn, empower Puerto Rico’s food sovereignty and economy.
