Dr. Michael McGee
Fisheries Expert, Supplier, and Consultant
Dr. Michael V. McGee is a key component of the successful design and implementation of the aquaculture portion of Fusion Farms. We are also working closely with Caribe Fisheries, Inc. to source the hatchlings and original Tilapia stock we require for our aquaponics systems.
Dr. McGee has extensive experience and training in the areas of aquaculture, aquatic ecology, water chemistry, and fisheries science. For the past 18 years he has successfully developed and operated his own aquaculture-agriculture business Caribe Fisheries Inc., located in the Lajas Valley of Puerto Rico, where he is involved in all phases of aquaculture and their applications to improving local productivity, industry, and overall quality of life.
Caribe Fisheries produces ornamental and food fish species, freshwater shrimp, aquatic plants, vegetables and herbs for sale in Puerto Rico. Most recently, Dr. McGee introduced a new aquaculture species, not only to Puerto Rico but also to the entirety of the western hemisphere: the Basa catfish. This makes our island nation the only place in the western hemisphere to culture this food fish. Exports from Vietnam to other countries all over the world exceed a value of $1,000,000,000 a year so there is great potential for tropical regions to culture this valuable species.
Dr. McGee also offers integrated aquaculture-agriculture systems training programs and aquaculture consulting. He is working closely with the team at Fusion Farms and other institutions to increase awareness of aquaculture in Puerto Rico.
