Welcome to Fusion Farms Puerto Rico
Fusion Farms builds and manages modern, sustainable, and hurricane-protected indoor aquaponics farming solutions for Puerto Rico, and for any community facing environmental, climate, and economic challenges. Our first farm is based in beautiful Mayagüez in western Puerto Rico, in an 11,500 square foot vacant concrete building. Within the safe and strong confines of our building, we have built a vertical indoor aquaponics farm that is designed to be powered by renewable energy and protected from outside influences, including tropical storms, harmful microbes, temperature extremes, and the island’s unreliable power grid.
Fusion Farms grows a year-round, reliable, and prolific harvest of fresh leafy greens, herbs, vegetables, fruits, and fish that will guide Puerto Rico towards a food sovereign future.
Hurricane protected farming on Puerto Rico
On September 19th, 2017, Hurricane Maria, a category five storm with wind speeds of up to 175 miles per hour, slammed into Puerto Rico causing total island devastation. The power grid and water supply were decimated and 80% of Puerto Rico’s farms were destroyed. Today, more than 85% of the island’s food is imported, traveling thousands of food miles to reach grocery store shelves, and is expensive to buy and void of nutrients by the time it arrives. Hundreds of Puerto Rico’s farmers have left their island looking for work. Now, after a series of earthquakes and the COVID-19 pandemic crashing economies and bringing logistics to a standstill around the world, reliance on imports could spell disaster for the island.
But we believe Puerto Rico can thrive!
Through Fusion Farms’ “closed environment aquaponics” or CEAq, we can produce a year-round, reliable harvest of fresh leafy greens, herbs, vegetables, fruits, and fish. It is our primary goal to grow Puerto Rico by eliminating the island’s dependence on importing expensive, rotting produce and instead, encouraging local, protected, urban agriculture while creating hundreds of jobs for farmers and locals.
We live at a time when the future of Puerto Rico is bright and full of opportunity and we hope you will join and support us to grow good food for good people.
“We don’t measure our day by the harvest we reap…but by the seeds of hope that we plant.”
The problem Fusion Farms solves:
Hurricane Maria destroyed 80% of the farms in Puerto Rico leaving its people reliant on food imports that has traveled so far and for so long that it has little or no nutrition. Consequently, the island has no food security and is forced to endure poor quality, expensive food shipped in from thousands of miles away.
The solution Fusion Farms introduces:
A hurricane-protected vertical aquaponic farm powered by renewable energy and harvested rainwater with advanced agriculture techniques like aquaponics and indoor vertical rack systems capable of growing 9 to 12 times the annual yield of traditional farming at 10% of the water costs.
Our advantage in helping Puerto Rico is:
Our partnership with the Puerto Rico Industrial Development Company (PRIDCO), which owns 7,5 million square feet of vacant concrete buildings scattered throughout the island, all of which have withstood the ravages of annual hurricane seasons. Fusion Farms is creating a new tax base for these unused government buildings, creating jobs for Puerto Ricans, and helping the island nation become a food sovereign territory.
Our team is:
A world-class combination of universities and highly-respected and accomplished professionals with decades of experience in their respective fields, from NASA, USDA, Controlled Environment Agriculture or CEAq, aquaponics, and farm management to water resource management, environmental science, marketing, and more.
